Are you a project manager who is successful?
You too? It’s a passion of mine.
As I work with my team, more and more ideas are coming out to improve our ability to deliver successful projects.
I also research the best project managers in different industries. I read a lot, leave lots of comments, and start many conversations.
You must be a great project manager if you want to be successful.
Many of the best project managers write blogs and books, and give presentations and training. They do things a little differently. (In some cases, it can be very different.)
Information overload
I would then read a book and be completely enthralled by a particular method or set of techniques that I wanted to try. I would talk to someone the next day and learn something that completely blew my mind. I knew I had to share it with my project teams.
My teams began to feel dizzy. “What is that crazy project manager going throw at us this week?” they’d groan.
I had to be focused on the basics. Not the shiny objects. What all great project managers have in common?
I spent a lot time watching and observing. This led me to this list of eight success traits shared with all the top project managers I have found. It’s my pleasure to share it with all of you today.
The good news is that most of these traits can be learned over time. These traits have been incorporated into my project management training courses. These traits will make you more successful in your daily life.
1.? 1.?
You’re likely new to project management and are probably still learning.
Perhaps you believe that things will get easier if you do it more often. There won’t be as much to learn. You’ll soon have systems in place and everything will run smoothly.
Unfortunately, this is a myth. I have been managing projects for many decades and I am always learning. Every time I think I have mastered one aspect, nagging thoughts pop up and beckon me to work more effectively with my team.
You can’t stop learning if you want to be the best manager of projects. You must keep learning, whether it’s through blogs, books, podcasts, or training courses.
Being curious and eager to learn keeps your brain active and young. You can have a happy and fulfilling career by having a passion for learning.
2.? Effective Project Managers Are Clear Communicators
This is a must-have.
Communication is 90% of project management, right? It’s not possible to give a percentage, but it is a large part of what makes you successful as a project manager.
Clear communication is key to ensuring that your teams and customers are happy. It’s not good.
It’s not good at all.
3.? 3.?
Successful project managers see their projects as systems.
Systems thinking is a great way to approach project work and identify areas that can be improved.
You must be able to objectively analyze the work of your team and identify areas for improvement to be a successful project manager. What is the work flow? What is the value stream? What are the bottlenecks in the value stream?
4.? 4.?Effective Project Managers are Focused
Successful project managers keep their teams and themselves focused on the Goal.
A project manager who is skilled at managing projects can protect her team from multitasking when a flood of requests comes in. She can use systems like Kanban and other priority mechanisms to keep them safe.
5.? 5.?Effective Project Managers Value Planning
Successful project managers recognize the value of planning.
